Somalia: Puntland soldiers stage mutiny in Bosaso

BOSASO – Troops in Somalia’s northeastern regional state of Puntland have briefly staged a mutiny.

Dozens of soldiers seized the compound of Ministry for fisheries in Bosaso town and blocked nearby streets.

The protest took place on Sunday morning, according to witnesses.

However, officials in the town told them to return to their barracks and their problems will be addressed as soon as possible.

It had been reported that the soldiers were protesting about a delay in the payment of salaries as well as poor working conditions.

Last year, soldiers took control of the central bank and the region’s assembly in Garowe in protest at lack of payments.

The region has been fighting hundreds of al-Shabaab and ISIS fighters in Galgala mountains for the last three years.
