NAIROBI (HAN) February 7, 2016 – Public Diplomacy and Regional Stability Initiatives News. Kenya’s Abraham Kiptum, has won the the first Lagos city marathon ahead of his compatriot, Hosea Kipkembe and Ethiopia’s Debebe Toise who came in third.
Kiptum, who clocked 2 hours 16 minutes and 21 seconds to win the race, said the humid conditions had slowed his time.
“The race was not bad but I try to do my best. It is my first time running in a very high humid but I thank God for this day. Next time I try to run good time, since last year I was having injury, I did not run any race,” said Kiptum.
Over 20,000 athletes, including 150 local and international world-class runners participated in the keenly contested race.
In the women’s contest, the East Africans once again swept the boards with Ethiopia’s Halima Hussain clocking 2:38:36 to win ahead of Kenya’s Alice Timbul who came in second with a time of 2:38:49.
Aberash Fetase of Ethiopia returned 2:39:09 to place third.
The winners of both male and female categories pocketed $50,000 dollars each for their victory.
