ADDIS ABABA (HAN) September 13.2016. Public Diplomacy & Regional Security News. Five states have granted amnesty for a total of 9, 833 inmates following Ethiopian New Year.
Tigray, Oromia, SNNP, Benshangul-Gumuz and Afar are the states which freed the prisoners for the New Year.
Accordingly, Oromia alone pardoned 5,463 inmates while SNNP, Tigray, Benshangul-Gumuz and Afar states freed 3,300, 92, 111 and 35 prisoners, respectively.
According to the respective security and administration bureau heads of the states, the inmates were pardoned in accordance with the country’s amnesty law.
Those who had committed acts of domestic violence as well as convicted of human trafficking and corruption were not involved in the pardoned list, they said.
The heads called on the pardoned inmates to be productive and peaceful, according to FBC.
