Ethiopia, Russia to Strengthen Ties

On April 25, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Foreign  Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Tewodros Adhanom, who is in Moscow on a working visit.

The two ministers gave a high appraisal of the dynamic development of the traditionally friendly Russian-Ethiopian relations in various areas, and reiterated the shared willingness of Moscow and Addis Ababa to build up their mutually advantageous trade and economic partnership with an emphasis on ambitious joint projects in energy, hydrocarbon production and infrastructure development on Ethiopian territory.

The sides emphasised the importance of effectively using the mechanism of the Intergovernmental Russian-Ethiopian Commission on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation and Trade, and also of further cooperation in education, science and high technologies. Mr Lavrov and Mr Adhanom discussed topical international and regional issues, including ways of unblocking African conflicts. In particular, they considered the current situation in Somali, South Sudan, Sudan, and the inter-Sudanese settlement. While exchanging opinions on the Middle East and North African situations, the ministers emphasised the need for the global community to promote a political resolution to the conflicts in Syria, Yemen and Libya via an inclusive national dialogue, and with respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of these countries. The sides assigned  importance to broad international anti-terrorist cooperation, with the UN playing the central coordinating role.
