South Sudan sanctions regime mandate renewed until June

The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution renewing the mandate of the South Sudan sanctions regime for an additional seven weeks until 1st June. In a presidential statement issued after the vote, the Council welcomed news “that some progress” was made on the steps outlined by the Council in its 17 March presidential statement. They relate to the implementation of the August 2015 peace, among other issues. This includes the return of some members of the SPLA in Opposition to Juba, South Sudan. Nonetheless, the Council expressed regret that several steps outlined in the 17 March presidential statement “were not fully met.
