Overview
Insecurity in Somalia continues to threaten prospects for state stability and development. Attacks on African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) bases and the recapture of Merca Port by al-Shabaab, and UN estimates that over one million civilians remain internally displaced and three quarters of the population live in poverty, highlight the fragility of progress. Yet state formation processes continue and Somalia is scheduled to hold elections in the autumn.
Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Mohamed Omar Arteh, will discuss the political hurdles that need to be negotiated before elections can take place. He will also consider Somalia’s development priorities, including commitments made by the government and its international partners at the High Level Partnership Forum in Istanbul in February.
