Influx of S.Sudan Refugees to Ethiopia has Declined Sharply

JUBA (HAN) November 17, 2015. Public Diplomacy & regional Security. The UNHCR office in Addis Ababa said on Saturday (November 14) that the number of South Sudan refugees crossing the border into Ethiopia has shown a significant decline during the recent weeks.

Kisut Gebregzabiher, UNHCR’s senior public information officer in Addis Ababa, said there was no more than an average of six South Sudanese refugees arriving at the Ethiopian border a day. This is a sharp contrast from last year when up to 2,000 people a day were crossing the borders to escape fierce fighting between the South Sudan government and SPLM-in-Opposition.

The decline came, the UNHCR said, after the signing of the peace agreement last August. Ethiopia currently hosts the largest number of South Sudanese refugees who fled from the violence in South Sudan, with nearly 290,000 South Sudanese, in addition to tens of thousands who fled to Ethiopia before the fighting since 2013.

They are currently sheltered in camps in the Gambella Regional State. Last year Ethiopia was forced to open new camps to cope with the influx of South Sudanese refugees. MFA
