ADDIS ABABA (HAN) November 17, 2015. Public Diplomacy & regional Security. Ethiopian Airlines, the largest, fastest growing and most profitable airline in Africa, has announced that it has been named for the fourth year in a row as the Airline of the Year by the African Airlines Association at the Association’s 47th Annual General Assembly held last week (November 8-12), in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

Ethiopian Airlines was given the award of Airline of the Year for its outstanding financial performance in 2014 and its ever expanding intra-Africa network and sound growth plan, its consistent profitability and sound strategy, which has enabled Ethiopian to enhance partnerships with fellow African airlines, showcasing ASKY and Malawian Airlines, as successful multiple hub operators for the continent.

Last week, the Airline said it plans to place orders for at least 10 Airbus A350-900 aircraft in the next two years, in addition to the 14 already on order. The first of these is expected to arrive in May.

CEO Tewolde Gebremariam attributed the Airlines’ recent growth to a rise in passenger numbers and to the expansion of its maintenance, catering and aviation training services. Its net profit for the 2014-25 fiscal year which ended in July, was 3.5 billion birr ($167.93 million), 0.6 billion birr more than expected. MFA
