Ethiopian Christians ready to celebrate Easter

Addis Ababa (HAN) April 30. 2016. Public Diplomacy & Regional Security News. Followers of the Christian faith in Ethiopia are getting ready to celebrate Easter otherwise called Fasika Sunday.The holiday comes after eight weeks of fasting from meat and dairy, among Orthodox and Catholic Christians.

On Easter Eve, Ethiopian Christians participate in hours-long church service that ends around 3 a.m., after which they break their fasting and celebrate Easter.

Women are busy during the holiday starting from cleaning homes to preparing stew, baking bread and enjera, among others.

Men are responsible to buy sheep and goat that will be sacrified on the holiday. There is also a tradition of buying and slautering a bull whose flesh would be apportioned up to ten members.

The celebration of Easter among Orthodox Christians continues for a week. The following week after Easter is a time during which family re-unions, family visits are common.

Apart from its religious values, Easter in Ethiopia is celebrated both as a time of family reunion in which family members from distance areas come together and to show solidarity among members of a community, he added.

With the coming of Easter, the prices of sheep or goats and chicken increased compared to their corresponding prices in previous holiday and the price of a sheep or goat ranges between $71 and $190.

The price of a chicken rises up $14 while the floor price is $ 8. The price of bull reaches up $952 as a kilo of butter, the other most important holiday item, can be bought at $9 on average.

The clothing market has also seen high number of buyers and sellers but various fashionable clothes are being sold at lower prices in temporarily set up bazaars in different parts of the country.
