Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan on Monday signed an initial agreement on sharing water from the Nile River that runs through the three countries, as Ethiopia constructs a massive new dam it hopes will help alleviate its electricity shortages. El-Sissi, al-Bashir and Desalegn welcomed the agreement in speeches in Khartoum’s Republican Palace on Monday.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn, Sudan President Omar-Al Bashir and Egyptian President Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi with their respective high delegation gathered to attend signing ceremony of agreement on declaration of principles on GERD in Khartoum.
“While you are working for the development of your people, keep in mind the Egyptian people, for whom the Nile is not only a source of water, but a source of life,” el-Sissi said, addressing his Ethiopian counterpart.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn again said, “We can materialize the development we aspire in the basin only through dialogue and continuous cooperation in order to ensure mutual benefit for all.”
GERD is a project which catalyzes cooperation that can be a base for regional integration. The blue dam has been a possible issue of contention among the three nations, threatening to reduce Egypt’s share of the Nile and challenging a colonial-era agreement that had given the rights to exploit the river’s water just to Egypt and Sudan.
