Ethiopia: The first FM Commercial Stations

Djibouti (HAN) February 12, 2006 - The Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority said it has decided to give FM commercial radio licenses for two organizations. It also said Radio Fanna and Demtse Woyane requested to continue as commercial radio stations.

According to a statement authority Deputy Director General, Desta Tesfaw and other officials of the authority gave on Friday, the authority gave the FM radio licenses to two organizations, namely Zami Public Connections and Adie Public Relations and Tensae Arts.

The deputy director general said the organizations were licensed because they have fulfilled the necessary criteria on the competition with 12 other organizations.

He said among the criteria were capital capacity and technical knowledge of the organizations in addition to the transmitting power of their transmitters and the length of their antenna, among others.

He said especially the preparation of the project on domestic programs and languages as well as capability to satisfying the demand of the society as well as the time table they set had been taken in to consideration.

He said per the announcement the authority made, 12 organizations had been registered last year of which six of them were cancelled from the competition because they had failed to provide cpo with their project proposals.

While two organizations removed themselves from the competition for their own reasons, he said.

The licensing process had been delayed due to some problems, especially in connection with the May national election, he said.

However, the authority had performed several organizational tasks to perform the activity in a meticulous way, the deputy director general said.

He said there is a plan to give additional FM radio licenses in the future, adding that till now licenses have been given to the Amhara and South Ethiopia Peoples States as well as the Dire Dawa administration.

He said a study has been conducted to give community radio licenses and it will be given shortly.

He said based on the existing law, it is impossible to give license to religious institutions, political parties and foreigners.

Regarding TV licensing, only one organization has responded due to the higher investment the sector demands, Desta said.

Asked whether the licensed organizations have had relations with the government, the officials said those organizations meeting the set criteria were made eligible with out discrimination.

Asked about the fate of Radio Fanna and Demsti Woyane that had been licensed previously, the officials said the two radio stations have requested to continue as commercial radio stations.

The Ethiopian Micro Finance Institute loans

Addis Ababa (HAN) February 12, 2006 – The Arba Minch Branch Office of the Omo Micro Finance Institute provided 11.6 million birr during the ended year to 12, 000 people. Branch Office Manager Demisse Admassu said the loan was provided to needy people in rural and urban woredas of Arba Minch. Konsso, Derashie, Basketo, West Abaya, Kucha ,Chencha and Jinka

More than 3,900 of the beneficiaries of the loan were women, he said, adding the beneficiaries of the loan were engaged in animal fattening, poultry, apiary and farming.

The institute organized 1,380 clients in urban areas who were unemployed and provided 3.2 million birr loan and helped to take part in various income generating schemes, Demissie said .

The manager said the beneficiaries of the loan in the urban areas were engaged in weaving, construction, wood and metal work as well as petty trade.

The clients of the institute managed to save over 4 million birr during the stated year as they were successful in their preference business..
