Ethiopia To strengthen Africa’s support to IGAD Initiative

Addis Ababa (HAN) June 16, 2015 – Public Diplomacy and Regional Safety and Security News – Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn chaired a session to launch IGAD-Plus. IGAD-Plus is an initiative set up to give new impetus to the IGAD-led SouthSudan mediation.

IGAD-Plus consists AU High-Level Ad-hoc Committee of Heads of State and Government comprising Algeria, Chad, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa .It is intended to strengthen Africa’s support to IGAD and to assist the South Sudanese Parties and stakeholders to achieve durable peace in their country.

Prime Minister Hailemariam said “as per the IGAD Summit Resolution of November 2014, the Peace and Security Council of the African Union already established an AU High-Level Ad-hoc Committee of Heads of State and Government from Algeria, Chad, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa, to strengthen Africa’s support to IGAD and to assist the South Sudanese Parties and stakeholders to achieve durable peace in their country”

Prime Minister Hailemariam added partnership in peace is in tradition of ‪#‎IGAD‬ and appreciated the role of ‪#‎AU‬ in establishing the AU High-Level Ad-hoc Committee.

Prime Minister Hailemariam also noted that IGAD mediation has made substantial gains albeit the continuing war and expressed his hopes that few remaining issues will be resolved. Ambassador Seyoum Mesfin noted that IGAD-Plus comes as a way to manage the challenge collectively with as an African solution to African problems.

Meanwhile: Dr.Tedros and Minister Mashabane also exchanged views on bilateral, regional and sub-regional issues, particularly on ways to stabilize the region particularly ‪#‎Somalia‬ and ‪#‎SouthSudan‬ and agreed to work closely both in bilateral and multilateral forums .
