Ethiopia Signed MoU with World Intellectual Property Organization

Addis Ababa (HAN) July 30, 2015 – Public Diplomacy and Regional Security Initiative News – Ambassador Negash Kibret Botora, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the United Nations Office at Geneva and Other International Organizations and Dr. Francis Gurry, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) signed today a Memorandum of Understanding on the Implementation of the Capacity Building in the Use of Appropriate Technology Specific Technical and Scientific Information as a Solution for Identified Development Challenges. Following the signing ceremony, they had exchanged views on how to further enhance the existing cooperation to a higher level to support Ethiopia’s efforts to build its economy by using appropriate technology and intellectual property tools. In this regard, H.E. Ambassador Negash commended the World Intellectual Property Organization and the Director General for the continued support the Organization has been providing to Ethiopia in strengthening the capacity of the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office, in the drafting of the first national IP policy and ensuring the use of IP for development. He also commended WIPO’s recent Training of Trainers Program held in Ethiopia on the use of intellectual property tools by small and medium enterprises. He further stated that the signing of this MOU is a clear indication of the continued support from WIPO to Ethiopia as it will provide a framework for strengthened support from WIPO in the use of appropriate technology. The Director General of WIPO, after expressing the usefulness of the MOU in terms of helping Ethiopia in various technological applications , reaffirmed once again the commitment of the Organization and his own to further consolidate the cooperation of Ethiopia and WIPO in the years ahead.
