Eritrea,
Djibouti plan wider regional security cooperation
Mogadishu (HAN) April
30, 2008- Eritrea and Djibouti plan to sign their first
comprehensive agreement on regional cooperation, Eritrea defence
ministry said Monday, in another sign of warming ties between
the two historic friends since 2006.
The two parties "are pushing to sign a comprehensive agreement
on security cooperation," a ministry spokesman told HAN.
"Bilateral military cooperation so far has been on a much
smaller and irregular basis," the spokesman said. "No details
have yet been fixed and there is no concrete date yet for
signing it."
Such an agreement would be the first since French's colonial
rule over the Djibouti Red Sea peninsula ended in 1978 after 98
years of French colony.
The Shabiya news agency said it was likely to be signed during a
visit by Eritrea's Defence Minister sometime this year to solve
the Doumeira issues on the question of Eritrea and Djibouti
border crisis.
