Eritrea
in no position to attack Djibouti: minister
Djibouti (HAN) June 30th, 2008 - Djibouti's
foreign minister said on Sunday he did not believe Eritrea was
in a position to attack his country over its Djibouti-Eritrean
Border Plan, while the Djibouti military general announced plans
to prepare border security watch positions for an Eritrean enemy
soldier's movement.
The comments were the latest in an escalating war of words
between the arch-foes that have helped regional speculation of a
possible Eritrean attack on Djibouti, the world's poorest
countries on earth, helping Eritrean plights to the highest
peak.
Speculation has risen since a HAN & Geeska Afrika Online
reported, a two months ago that, Eritrea had practiced a border
skirmish against the Afar liberation bases, which the Eritrean
regime suspects a form of covert Ethiopian plan to attack Assab
port from the Djibouti side border. Djibouti government denies
those roamers.
Djibouti Foreign Minister Mahamoud Ali Yourself, said Eritrea
was still dealing with the consequences of its 1998 war with
Ethiopia and was also suffering a crisis of deepening
illegitimacy in the Horn of Africa and the East Africa region.
"That's why we do not see the Eritrean leadership in a situation
in which they would want to engage in such adventurism against
Djibouti," he said when asked about the possibility of an
Eritrean border attack.
The Eritrea Ethiopia dispute is part of a set of regional
tensions that extends into Somalia, where Ethiopian troops are
supporting an interim government, and into Djibouti, whose
forces clashed with Eritrean troops earlier this month. "The
Eritrean regime knows full well what the consequences of such a
nasty act would be," Yourself, told reporters.
The African Union officially condemned Eritrea on Sunday for
taking military action against Djibouti near a strategic Red Sea
shipping route. "The African Peace and Security Council strongly
condemns Eritrean regime for its military action against
Djibouti border and the African PSC requests it to pull out from
the occupied Djibouti land," a senior AU official HAN Reporter
In Cairo, Egypt.
The new volatile border between Eritrea and Ethiopia: UN
Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned that the withdrawal of UN-MEE
could spark renewed conflict on the 1,000 km frontier.
Therefore, the U.N. Security Council considered on Monday a plan
to disband its peacekeeping mission.
