Djibouti: The project “Improving Land Governance in the IGAD Region”

Djibouti (HAN) February 20, 2015- Public Diplomacy and Regional Development Bank news. The launch of the project for “Improving Land Governance in the IGAD Region” was initiated by IGAD Secretariat to facilitate and monitor the implementation of the AU Declaration.

 Work within existing regional platforms for knowledge sharing and advocacy aimed at promoting good land governance and land policy convergence among IGAD Member States (Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda).

The project for “Improving Land Governance in the IGAD Region” was launched in Djibouti, under this 6-year project, supported by the Swedish Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the IGAD Secretariat aim to enhance the capacity of the LPI and IGAD Secretariat to facilitate and monitor the implementation of the AU Declaration on Land in the Region;

  • mainstream land governance issues in IGAD programs; develop the capacity of regional academic institutions for land policy related research;
  • work within existing regional platforms for knowledge sharing and advocacy to promote good land governance and land policy convergence among IGAD Member States;
  • improve partnerships and coordination in land governance related programs in the IGAD Region;
  • and facilitate monitoring and evaluation of land policy reform processes.

The IGAD Land Policy Initiative was established in 2006 as a joint initiative of the AU Commission, the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the African Development Bank with a view to facilitating national land policy development processes within the context of the AU Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy in Africa which was endorsed by the 13th Assembly of the AU Heads of State and Government in Libya in 2009.

The project launch was followed by a meeting of the Project Steering Committee  and an Inter-Regional Economic Commission Meetings.
