The 9th Ethiopian Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day was colorfully celebrated in the Benishangul Gumuz Regional State on Monday (December 8). More than 4,000 people representing all the nations and nationalities of Ethiopia were present at the celebration being held at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam’s construction site in the Guba woreda of Benishangul Gumuz.
The ceremonies were attended by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, other high-ranking government officials, and members of the diplomatic corps as well as honored by the presence of the President of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir and President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, the two Guests of Honor..
On the occasion, the Prime Minister, noting that the economic growth registered during the past decade was the result of the joint efforts and collaboration of all the nations and nationalities of the country, called for them to scale up their support for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. He stressed that the adoption of the Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia had laid the foundation for Ethiopians to exercise their rights as well as allow them benefit from the gains of development. Prime Minister Hailemariam also called on the nations and nationalities of Ethiopia to play their part in the efforts to make next year’s election fair, democratic and peaceful. The Speaker of the House of Federation, Kassa Teklebrhan, said the day marked the constitutionally guaranteed rights of the nations, nationalities and peoples of Ethiopia.
The Constitution, he said, was the foundation of Ethiopia’s renaissance and was creating a generation of ‘development patriots.’ In the last 20 years, the Ethiopian nations, nationalities and peoples had contributed a great deal to eradicate poverty, ignorance and backwardness, and he called on all Ethiopians and the Ethiopian Diaspora to intensify their efforts to develop the country. President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan expressed his great pleasure at participating in the event and said his government would continue to enhance people-to-people as well as government-to-government cooperation.
President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti said the celebration was unique as it marked the 20th anniversary of the ratification of Ethiopian Constitution. The Chief Administrator of Benishangul Gumuz Regional State, Ahmed Nasir, noted that the regional state had registered substantial and tangible results in infrastructure and social and economic developments following the adoption of the constitution.
