Ethiopia: Free All Prisoners of Conscience

Addis Ababa (HAN) December 29, 2017 – Public Diplomacy & Opinion By. Geeska Afrika Online Reader.

Opinion: Mainly Oromo and Amara activists in Ethiopia are making use of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook in a campaign for the release of Oromo and Amara persons in jail for political reasons.

Their main logo is “Free all prisoners of conscience. They are innocent journalists, opposition party leaders, religious preachers and activists unjustly charged for demanding the gov’t to respect the constitution and basic human rights.”

With the hashtag #FreeAllPrisonersOfConscience different Twitter users shared photos of persons ranging from journalists, politicians, religious preachers and activists.

The Oromo/Amara forum also offered a number of people who had faced detention to share their experiences as was the case with one Nagessa Dube, whose Twitter bio describes him as a human rights activist and member of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress.
