Rio Olympics: African Teams Performed

Here is a quick look at how African teams performed at the Rio Olympics games.
After their blow out loss to Argentina in their opening Group B match, Nigeria registered an improved performance against European representatives Lithuania. The West Africans narrowly lost 89-80 in an end to end action game that saw the 2015 AfroBasketball champs rekindle their hopes of qualification to the quarters. And in Swimming, Ethiopian Robel Habte won the hearts of many fans at the 100M freestyle swimming heats. Habte, who registered the slowest time finishing 12 seconds later than the rest of the field found himself being urged on by the crowd at the Rio Olympic Aquatics stadium. After losing two of their Group E matches against Sweden and China, the South Africa women’s football team bowed out of this year’s Olympic games with a nil-nil draw against hosts Brazil, ending their campaign on a high note by registering a point. Zimbabwe women’s football team also bowed out of the Rio Games after being thrashed 6-1 by Australia. Despite the game being largely one way traffic, the Zimbabweans received plenty of support from the fans and when they eventually scored their consolation goal, it was easily evident from the stands.
