Ethiopia: Agreement signed to recruit, train 30,000 Industrial Park

Addis Ababa (HAN) July 21.2016. Public Diplomacy & Regional Security News. An agreement to launch a major project to source, recruit and train 30,000 textile and garment workers for the newly inaugurated Hawassa Industrial Park was signed here yesterday.

The agreement was signed by Enterprise Partners, Trade and Industry Bureau of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR), Ethiopian Textile Industry Development Institute, and the Tenants’ Association representing the manufacturers at park.

The training will begin this September, it was indicated.

The project targets to prevent the current high labor turnover through effective synchronization of expectation between the new recruits and the factories.

It will also undertake a sourcing process-informing, registering, orienting and pre-selecting a total of 60,000 job seekers (80 percent women) in two and half years from potential recruitment areas within SNNPR.

During the occasion, Industry State Minister Tadesse Haile said the project is very excellent example of public-private partnership which is established to ensure smooth integration of new textile and apparel investments into Hawassa industrial park which was inaugurated last week.

This program is expected to make substantial contributions to the implementation of this initiative of building state-of-the-art eco-industrial park in Hawassa.

He added that the industries in Hawassa will have to be become efficient and competitive very quickly by shortening the learning curb to be successful in the global market.

The best practice that will be achieved in this program will be replicated to other industrial parks which are on pipeline and operational in the coming nine months, the state minister elaborated.

He urged all signatories and stakeholders to strive for the success of the project and its efficient implementation.

Enterprise Partners Managing Director, Nebil Kellow said on his part the industrial park project in Hawassa is not only about Hawassa; this is about Ethiopia’s industrialization drive — creating a template and foundation in a system that works and can be scaled up across the country.

To make the employees more productive, identifying, developing and training them is important, he added.

Enterprise Partners is a program of UK’s Department for International Development (DfID) established in 2013 to facilitate market’s development in order to create jobs and raise incomes of Ethiopian living with poverty, particularly women.
