The Addis Ababa Youth Association yesterday celebrated its 18th founding anniversary through panel discussion. The association and participants of the discussion bought GERD lottery.
Association President Ermias Matiwos on the occasion said that the Association is working to make the youth duty-bound, productive, responsible and ethical that can actively participate in the overall development activities of the nation.
Owing to the effort exerted by the association, he said that fruitful achievements have been registered and made the youth an active participants in the city in particular and in the country in general.
Ex-President Tatek Kassa on his part said that coordinated youth movements were started as of the reign of Emperor Haileslassie under the movements of university students and scout groups.
“There were also similar movements during the Derg regime as there were massive oppression of rights and freedom to all. Since then, the youth have been advocates of democracy and freedom. Today’s peace and economic growth are the fruits of the sacrifice of the then youth.” he noted.
Tatek further said that different from its predecessors, the incumbent has ensured constitutional guarantee and adopted policy supports to enable the youth benefit from the national development.
According to him, it is under this backdrop the Addis Ababa Youth Association was legally founded in 1998, seven years later to the downfall of the Derg regime.
He also said that the Association was doing its level most to meet the political, economic and social demands of its members and the youth in general, lobbying governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Association Member Biruk Worku told The Ethiopian Herald that some people placed the association is politically affiliated but not. The association is free and founded as civic organization.
The former members of the Association comedians Bereket Bekele known by nickname Filfilu and Demissie Fikadu presented their works and gave color to the event.
On the occasion, Association former , honorary and present members and the participants bought GERD lottery.
