Ethiopia: Ministry Urged to Take Concrete Steps in Industry, Manufacturing Sector

ADDIS ABABA (HAN) May 5. 2016. Public Diplomacy & Regional Security News. By Yared Gebremeden. The House of People’s Representatives Industrial Affairs Standing Committee yesterday urged that the Ministry of Industry to make concrete change in the manufacturing and industry sector in a bid to transforming the economy as per the Growth and Transformation Plan.

The Ministry has presented its nine months performance report to the House in the 27th regular meeting of the first year parliamentary session.

The House has approved the minute of the 26th regular meeting at the beginning of the session.

Presenting Ministry nine-month performance report, Minister Ahmed Abtew noted that various efforts have been made to raise labor intensive industries to high level new diversified industries such as manufacturing industries.

The Ministry has been working strongly on improving work processes by allocating a total of 37.66 Million Birr and has used 27.1 million Birr in a stated period.

He added: ” The Ministry has also developed strategies to tackle rent seeking, industry input supply bottlenecks, on improving the capacity of institutions and universities on leather, textile and metal sectors to benefiting the maximum out of the sector”

The Minister added that it has jointly been implementing Kaizen with Kaizen institute and sub sectors. “Improving the productivity and investment of the manufacturing sector, supporting the sector with technologies, development of agro industrial parks and agro processing are also the areas that the ministry is giving ample focus to”

Ahmed also reported that over 289 million USD have been secured from the manufacturing export revenue from the planned of more than 477 million USD which is about 60 per cent.

During the discussion, members of the Parliament raised various issues related to the way of reporting, the process oriented nature of the report which is not easily measurable, the law performance achieved by the sector.

Summarizing the compiled suggestions of the Industrial Affairs Standing Committee of the House, Committee Chairperson Birihanu Mekuye said that the Ministry has achieved low performance in the areas of export, productivity, job creation, loose work and relationship with investors. He added said ” it has also better practices in quickly preparing GTP preparation, in organizing Change Army, strong organizational links, good begginings in supplying with inputs, imposition of new industry programs are some to be mentioned among others”
