Eritrea: Asmara World Heritage City Candidature

ASMARA (HAN) February 2, 2016 – Public Diplomacy and Regional Stability Initiatives News. Candidature of the city of Asmara to the World Heritage List was submitted on the 1st of February 2016, to the World Heritage Center Headquarters of UNESCO in Paris.

The Asmara Heritage Office prepared the nomination dossier and all the supporting documents in accordance with operational guidelines for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention.

Mrs. Hanna Simon, Eritrea’s Ambassador to France and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, imparted the nomination dossier under the title of “Asmara: Africa’s Modernist City” added to pertinent documents to the Director of UNESCO World Heritage Center, Dr. Mechtild Rössler.

It is to be remembered that the historic perimeter of Asmara, along with its modernist architecture, was put in the tentative list of UNESCO in 2005.

Moreover, Asmara’s application is expected to be approved by July 2017 as the project already responds to several criterions.
