Ethiopian Diaspora Engagement Policy

ADDIS ABABA (HAN) November 23, 2015 – Public Diplomacy and Regional Stability Initiatives News. Diaspora Engagement Affairs Office of Foreign Affairs Director General, Teferi Melese, briefed the Sierra Leone Office of Diaspora Affairs Director, Kallay Musa Conteh on Ethiopian Diaspora Policy on Friday (November 20).

Ato Teferi said that the Government had initiated its Diaspora engagement policy realizing the full contribution Diaspora could play in achievement of the country’s plans to reach middle income status.

It had issued Diaspora bonds, created knowledge and skill transferring mechanisms and initiating forums to consider Diaspora issues. In addition it had provided the Diaspora with the same investment rights as citizens, encouraged formal channels for remittance flows and allowed account-transferring from foreign banks to local banks as well as additional incentives for foreign nationals of Ethiopian origin in the Diaspora.

The Director General emphasized that the Government recognized the importance Diaspora engagement in Ethiopia’s development. Mr.Conteh, who praised developments he witnessed in Addis Ababa, admired the progress Ethiopia had made in encouraging Diaspora participation in the overall development of the country. MFA
