Somalia: Regional Consultations on the 2016 Electoral Process Start

MOGADISHU (HAN) November 18, 2015. Public Diplomacy & regional Security. The Somali authorities launched regional consultations to discuss the 2016 electoral process across the country on Monday (November 16).

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said forums were being held in Mogadishu, Baidoa, Kismayo, Garowe and Adado, and will each be attended by up to 150 people from the area. The President said in a statement issued in Mogadishu that: “Today is a very exciting day in the development of Somalia as a democratic nation.

People from all over Somalia will gather to consider and discuss the best way for Somalia to support a peaceful transition of political power in September 2016.” The regional forums are being convened in order to identify and discuss the different possibilities for the electoral process next year.

The President said the consultative process would not be easy. It would require time and commitment. The results of the consultations will be expressed in a document that reflects the possibilities discussed in each of the consultation and this will be presented to the National Consultation Forum before the end of year.

The Provisional Federal Constitution states that the four-year term of the current Federal Parliament ends in August 2016 and the presidential term of office ends in September 2016. MFA
